Take note /r/politics, we are NOT Republicans...
Some of you who come here to our little bastion of the liberty-minded are notably quieter than you usually are. Is it because you realize that none of us are enthusiastic about the Republicans taking over the House of Representatives and cutting down that big lead the Democrats had in the Senate? Do any of you notice the lack of Republican gloating in these parts?
Here is a message we have been trying to illustrate to Democrats for some time: we are not any more happy when big govt. Republicans run the country than when big govt. Democrats do. Take note of the somber attitude here. Next time you feel the urge to accuse us of inconsistency in our views toward the Republicans versus Democrats you would do well to remember the atmosphere in r/libertarian (assuming intellectual honesty is a trait you possess or aspire to) right now.
The only Republican who even a few libertarians are happy to take office is Rand Paul, and it sure isn't because he's a Reublican. Read the discussion threads on him and you'll find that most libertarians have, at best, a tepid attitude toward him. A few are optimistic that his political views are actually closer to his father's than he has let on during the campaign trail, but a few are downright hostile toward him. Is that really the "Go team Republican" cheering you so readily accuse us of?
One final note I will make before leaving you to ponder this message: if you sense any happiness at all about yesterday's results among libertarians, it's probably optimism that gridlock will be the new situation in Washington for at least two years. It is absolutely consistent with our views to hope for such because liberty is our overriding concern. The very best we can hope for is that the very worst encroachments that either party has to offer will be met with stiff opposition by the other. If we can't stop the erosion of liberty, at least we can hope that partisanship will slow the rate at which it occurs and diminish its magnitude.
