Has anyone heard of a video cards causing lock ups and freezes in Windows and/or BIOS?

Old sapphire HD5770 seems to be causing lock ups, I've heard the drivers can do this, but it's locking up in the BIOS as well. I put an old 8500GT in and the lock ups stopped so it's something to do with the video card... Driver or hardware? What do you think reddit?
