Raising Chickens

I'm thinking about raising chickens in the next couple of months. I've got an area in between two sheds, that once cleaned out, will be perfect for building a run and a coop. Anyone else raise chickens and have tips for a beginner?

Everyone used to have chickens and other livestock, even in the cities, but now no one even knows how to go about it, which is pretty scary.
