Let's talk about chop blocks.

This topic comes up a lot when teams talk about Georgia Tech, with this being one of the main examples. When the guard is, from the snap, going after a linebacker with no intention of touching the DT, and the tackle engages low from the front, it is clean. If the DT positions himself in such a way as to make it look dirty (not trying to imply intent), how can one fault the offense?

In the play linked above, you can see that the guard has both of his hands away from the DT and is immediately going towards the linebacker. You can see the tackle engages low and from the front (initially, which is what matters). The DT then falls towards the pulling guard (because of his momentum from what looks to be an intended inside stunt) creating some contact and grasping at the guard (natural reaction to losing ones balance). The guard and the DT were never engaged on this play, meaning that this is a legal cut block, not an illegal chop block. This particular block looks really bad and is certainly unfortunate, though I feel that no one broke any rules.

Am I missing something?

TL;DR: Analysis of a minute detail of the game we love, and something that makes me rage.
