Why doesn't ink in a ballpoint pen flow out the back?

Looking at a typical ballpoint pen, it's basically the ballpoint tip and a tube of ink that is generally not sealed at the end. If you cut open the tube the ink seems fairly viscous and under normal usage you can see how it is pulled towards the tip. What keeps the ink from flowing out the back of the tube?
