A cat started hanging around the apartments where I live..

I'd never seen her before. She was adorable, though. Obviously an inside cat. She walks up to people and loves to be picked up. My boyfriend started calling her Slagathor, which probably doesn't fit.. but it's too late now... It's the name we use to refer to the kitty.

Anywho, I happened to see my upstairs neighbor filling a small bowl with catfood and I asked if he was feeding the "stray". He replied that it was-- in fact-- his cat. I thought that was really weird, as I haven't really heard of an "outside cat" in the middle of Houston. We don't exactly live in a neighborhood or anything. All I could think to say was "oh.." and just went back inside.

A couple of months down the line, the cat survives being outside in the hot, houston heat. I keep seeing her outside, and it dawns on me. I had never seen her before because she isn't a stray. She's my neighbors cat who got caught not paying the pet deposit. So, instead of finding a new home for her, just puts her outside to live and "hopes" she doesn't get killed, gets worms, or runs away.

Every so often i'll see a pathetic flea collar on this cat, but no identification otherwise.

I'm seriously thinking about adopting Slaggie.

It was really cold the other night so i brought her in. Wiped some dirt off her, first, and she hopped right on my couch and napped. When I started to play videogames, she cuddled in my lap and napped some more.

I'm falling for this cat, but if I really did adopt her and paid the pet deposit and everything.. My neighbor would probably get really upset if he saw "his" cat in my window. If he called the police or anything, would he have a valid case against me "stealing" his cat?

TL;DR My neighbors don't want to pay a pet deposit so they threw their cat outside and feed her occasionally, so I want to adopt her. Would it be "stealing" to try to adopt this kitten? Also, they're jerks.

--UPDATE!--

It turns out that a guy living upstairs was put in prison and his roommates didn't want to take care of his cat, so they threw her outside. I am now the proud owner of a fluffy kitty!
