So i just started playing Minecraft, can somebody give me some beginner pointers?

I found the minecraft wiki and a couple beginner guides, but they don't help for a couple things, the biggest of which is WHERE THE HELL DO I FIND COAL. i can't find any anywhere and i tried at least 3 different maps.

if anyone can help me with this or even just give me some basic tips for newbs that would be wonderful.
