External audio options for DSLR?

I've been shooting with a T2i and a 7D and I have really enjoyed it, but I'd like to get some better audio going.

What are some options for external audio, preferably able to interface with boom or shotgun as well as lav mics?

The price range is under $1k (without mics) preferably.
