What happened to the most moderate candidate winning?

Wasn't the old adage that the most moderate candidate usually wins? It seems as though the opposite trend has taken over. Instead of reaching across the isle being seen as a virtue, it's used as political ammunition against your character.

This cannot last...something will happen to reverse this trend, I think. But what?
