What have I done?

I was doing some homework at crunch time and without thinking, I threw my laptop into my bag and went to the print shop, forgetting I had changed the power settings a week or so earlier so that it wouldn't shut down when I closed the lid.

Well, I drive a motorcycle, and Florida is hot. Long story short; ever since then, my laptop has been over heating every once in awhile and shutting down. While it has greatly improved my saving habits, It's troublesome, as I can't afford to go get it checked out. I'm a graphic design student and can't afford losing my computer either. Will continuing to run it until I can afford a checkup likely do any catastrophic damage?
