Beast ways to find lava?

I haven't been to the Nether world yet, because I don't have enough obsidian. I've been digging around down at bedrock trying to find lava with no luck.

Am I in the wrong spot, or... I dunno, what am I doing wrong? I've only got three obsidian blocks so far.
