Friend in despair over 'worthless' English Lit degree

A good friend of mine is getting very upset and depressed upon realizing that her B.A. in English Lit. from a respectable, private 4-year college doesn't mean very much in the modern economy.

She doesn't want to teach. She'd like to get into writing and editing, but it's really hard to break into those industries, especially with no experience, and here on the west coast when most publishers are back east. Instead, she's stuck doing HR temp work, which sucks.

What can I tell her to encourage her, cheer her up, and help her find a real career?
