This election has proved one of two things: Either American Democracy has broken and can no longer adapt politically to new crises or Americans are incapable of electing a decent governing body by themselves.
These are the only two conclusions that I can come up with. Either, the American populace does not want the problems facing this nation to be fixed/have completely unreasonable expectation of what it means to "fix" things Or we are incapable of electing a few good men and simply genuflect in the direction that agrees with our ideologies.
I can't say that people definitely want the problems to be solved because they elect people who consistently have shown an inability to fix them (most incumbents) or who advocate for fantasies (most of the tea party). It is relatively clear that Manufacturing jobs are NOT coming back to the US ever. It's also equally clear that when faced with a choice between an effectual legislator (one who cares about his constituents and does the peoples business), and an ideologue, regardless of inclination left or right, the people will vote for the ideologue.
Further I can't absolutely say that we are incapable of electing good legislators because true idiots like O'donnell get voted down like the pox. Yet intelligent people who have served honorably and taken the high road, like Feingold, get voted down in favor of someone who would not even state a platform or pin down specific policy points.
People voted for change in 2008 and then decided moving the mountain wasn't happening fast enough so lets go back to the devil you know. I dont get it. Far from being totally ineffectual the Obama administration has made huge steps towards cleaning up this mess, sure the jobs picture is not where it should be but it took 8+ years of fiscal mismanagement to cause the great recession.
