how do you respond to people who go, "you know what i meant!"? how would you respond to stephen fry's video?

after reading your responses to fry's video, it's generally agreed that GNs are an annoying necessity. so when is it appropriate to correct someone and when is it not? but mainly, how can you be a GN without being an ass?
