Hey, NY! Who wants to start a cannabis legalization campaign for our state with me? (x-post from r/trees)

It seems to me that if you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself. But here's the problem: I can do it myself, but not by myself.

After seeing Washington's and Colorado's legalization campaigns pop up so quickly, I just have this urge to start one, so here I go. NY seems to be a pretty liberal minded state. I think that if we get enough support from politicians and other VIP's, we can really turn out the vote for this in say, 2012.

Now, down to business. I have a couple ideas, but expect most to come from other people.

My first plan of action, I think, would be to start working on a website. I and my roommate are decent enough w/computers, but if any of you want to also contribute to that part, I'm more than willing to let you. We are not webmasters, mind you. We would prefer to find someone who has experience running a site, and would be willing to devote their time to it....but that may be a long shot. I dunno. We'll certainly have later discussions about our plan of action regarding web stuff.

Also, I'll take any suggestions for the name of the campaign. "Legalize 2012" is already taken (Colorado), and I don't want to rip off the word "Sensible" from Washington. The first thing that came to my mind was "NY Legalize". Maybe not the most original name, but simple and to the point.

Now this next thing is completely unrelated to the name of the proposition/campaign, but I just wanted to put it out there. When we do eventually start writing up literature and talking about it, I really want to only be using the term "Cannabis", as it is the more globally recognized name of the substance, and there are no negative social stigmas(that I am aware of, at least) associated with that word.

But first things first: I want to gauge the interest in this idea. If you want to help, tell me how you think you can, tell me where you are from, and I will do my best to get back to you and try to help people get in touch with others from their respective areas. (I'm from the Rochester/Syracuse area myself.)

We can do this guys!

Edit/Notice: I will create a subreddit for this if it takes off.

Edit 2: It was brought to my attention in r/trees that NY does not have a system in place like California's for adding state-specific measures to the ballot. So, to clear up any confusion, I am not saying we have to try to do it exactly like California, or Colorado, or any other state. I was just referencing other states' efforts as a jumping off point for discussion.
