driving cross country (ottawa-chicago-calgary) any tips? places to stop and check out?

i'm leaving in a week, still trying to figure out my exact route, but i do know that between chicago and calgary my route is wide open. i am not in a rush and don't mind making some stops. are there any must see places along the way? anybody else done a cross country trip and care to share some advice?
