I either almost got my identity stolen, almost got surveilled, or almost got royally ripped off by a magazine saleman
So this girl knocks on my door, I figure it's a new neighbor: young, blonde, cute. I answer and she's really outgoing, here for a reason, but I couldn't immediately tell why. She makes it seem like she's doing a survey on how good her public speaking is. I say it's good.
She begins taking down my roommates's and my names, address, and phone# for a reference, I guess as proof she came to our door and got our opinion on her oration. She asks to come in and use our counter as a writing surface.
So she comes in and immediately mentions it's later than she thought it was, asked if it's really 6:30. She keeps talking vaguely, asking questions about what we like to do for fun, some other bs, and gives us brochures with small pics of different magazines and descriptions of them, saying she's trying to earn points for a trip to europe. At this point I'm thinking wtf...this is complete bullshit. She's a tricky fucking saleswoman. She's not getting a penny. She wouldn't directly say what she was doing until we kept asking about it, and she wouldn't directly say how much it would cost.
So we finally tell her we can't buy anything bc we have no money (which is true), and she's putting on this sketchy performance, outgoing but odd, not genuine at all, talking in circles. She says most people just do it for the points even if they don't get magazines...which still costs money. She tries again explaining it, we shoot her down, and she acts like she's about to leave.
Then she asks if she can use our phone to call her supervisor for some reason I can't remember, and I flat out say "No, I don't think so." She asks why, I tell her she's just acting really sketchy and I don't want her touching my phone.
She hands me some ID, a hard white plastic card that says "[cityname] Peddler's Permit" and her alleged name and usual ID info. It's all bent up on the edges, but it looks like it's been worn out on purpose. It just looked totally goofy. It would not look the way it did from being in a wallet slot.
I tell her to gtfo and that's that. WTF was this? Just a regular scam? It felt like she was casing the joint or something I can't explain.
My apt. complex doesn't allow shit like this, and it's after office hours. I called and left a message. I'm gonna call the city tomorrow too. It just made my skin crawl, she was fucking creeper. Any advice or info is appreciated. If I'm just a paranoid idiot who almost got scammed, well I guess I had it coming.
tl;dr: shadiest peddler in the world came into my house on false pretenses, I finally told her to gtfo because she was sketchy as hell. Feel like it was more than what it seemed.
Edit: city website has pdf of the laws and such. It's illegal to peddle without having your license visible from the start. I didn't see any until I told her she was sketchy, and it still looked fake
Edit2: should I call the police station and make a report? maybe they'll be on the lookout in my neighborhood.
Edit3: I didn't call, but there's a police email address to report suspicious activity, so I did that.
