In February of this year I photographed at a horribly lit gig in Leeds, UK. I then lost my HDD, now recovered, here are the shots I deemed worthy. Feedback would be great!
The lighting in the venue was simply red superbright LEDs pointed at the curved wall/ceiling (the venue is under railway arches, and this was in the smallest part of the venue, upstairs and with a low, arched ceiling. So it was pretty horrendously dark and I required flash.
My kit isn't brilliant, Nikon D80 w/SB600 flash using the standard 18-55 f3.5 - 5.6 lens and a 50mm 1.8. Had to do some hefty post processing to get them to be passable.
The artist is Valerie Poxleitner, known better as LIGHTS, a brilliant synth-pop musician from Canada. She's an awesome girl, very down to Earth but with some crazy ideas, she makes her own comics, plays WoW (even has a tattoo of one of the swords) and is crazily beautiful. I got the honour of hanging out backstage with her and was knocked back by how humble she is, constantly amazed at how lucky she is to travel the world and play her music, always excited to meet new people etc... there needs to be more musicians like her.
Anyway, I digress, any feedback and tips on horrendously lit situations? Have any of you been in them and how did you sort it out?
I'm an event photographer by trade, so I'm used to low light, but concert lighting as bad as what I had to deal with then was a new 'low'!
