Anyone know of anything that can make PDF scans of books/articles more readable?

I have to read endless amounts of scanned pages for school and the format is really killing me. (Usually two scanned pages per PDF page, all grainy and stuff.)

Does anyone know of something that can make them easier to read? I'm thinking something like Readability, but for PDFs.
