High schoolers of Reddit: how can I become a better teacher?
I'm going to teach English (7-12) and am still in the process of becoming certified. I don't have a ton of experience with teaching, although I've observed many classes and taught a few lessons. I'm basically looking for any advice from current students (or current teachers) about what works for you in an English classroom, what you hate, etc. What made your great English teachers great and the horrible teachers horrible?
Additional info: I'm 24, female, and I'll be teaching in the New England area (if anyone actually starts hiring...).
Thanks in advance to anyone who shares their experiences and/or offers some advice!
EDIT: I've tried to respond to as many people as I can because I truly appreciate all of your input and you guys have all had fantastic things to contribute so far. I am relatively new to Reddit and I am really overwhelmed by the thoughtful responses so many of you have offered.
I'm headed to bed now, but I will check back tomorrow--thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to respond. It is kind of terrifying to become a new teacher and it means a LOT that so many people who don't even know me are willing to offer advice and support.
