I am having serious issues at my workplace and I need your advice.
First of all, this is a throwaway account, because I feel pretty anxious writing about this at all. I've been a redditor for years, and I haven't asked you all for much but this would really count. I'm having some problems with my job and I could really use some advice in how best to handle it.
I got a semi-technical job at an agency making about 40k- and I'm fresh out of college. It's not exactly what I've wanted to do, but its somewhat creative, I have benefits, and it pays the rent. I understand this is a very difficult thing to come by in the market today, and I've been very grateful of the opportunity.
The nature of the job has had me working, at times, up to 12-14 hour shifts, doing pretty meticulous and mentally demanding work. It's a larger company, and I work in a subdivision of about 10 people. Since starting there about 4 months ago, I've done the best I could. I've been at work on time every day, had a great attitude and given 110% into what I'm doing. Even when its super challenging and I feel like I'm way out of my element, I've learned to adapt and keep my head up.
I get along with most of the people I work with, and I've always tried to be as personable as I can and please everyone. But I have one co-worker who has really become a problem for me. He barely does any work, and he blatantly disrespects everyone around him. It is beyond me how he is overlooked, without doing much work and clearly spending his time either surfing the web, reading a book, or (almost every day) going out to the bar for an hour or two and having a few drinks before coming back and doing even less work. To top it off, he has consistently been rude to me since I started there, always very patronizing and out of line, especially considering he doesn't even outrank me there.
And recently, it's gotten pretty bad. The hours have been longer, and I've decided this isn't the path for me at all. The type of work used to interest me, and its a very in-demand position, but I don't think I'm passionate about it anymore, if I was at all.
The last few days this co-worker has been even worse. Normally I don't let it get to me; sure, I pick up more work to do, because I'm new and I need to do the best I can, but I try not to concern myself over other people's laziness. I'm always hoping that I'll get promoted to a new department or find something else soon. But recently, the above mentioned has become increasingly erratic, arguing with me and harassing me for mistakes that I don't even make, or that weren't my fault. Even if I do make a mistake, it should be between my boss and I, not him. But for some reason, he's like a favorite of the boss, and is constantly taken care of and overlooked. It baffles everyone else in the department how this guy can get by this way, doing no work, either hungover or drunk and putting a strain on everyone else. And he's been there for years now.
Today we got in a heated argument, which resulted in me straight up leaving the office and wandering around the city to cool off. The whole time I've worked here, this person has berated me, harassed me and even made fun of me. It's gotten to the point where I seriously don't think I can work here anymore, and I'm thinking about quitting. And the worst part is that if he wasn't there, I probably would actually enjoy the job. My plan right now is to go and talk to my boss tomorrow and tell him what's up, and then if things don't get fixed either take it further up the chain or to HR, or otherwise put in my 2 weeks notice.
Any help would go a lot further than the cost of typing it.
TL;DR: I want to quit my job because the hours suck and I'm harassed by a lazy co-worker, but I don't feel like I can walk away from a paid position in this economy.
Thanks
