Renting an apartment with termites in California... What (legally) can we do?
We (my husband and I) moved into our apartment less than a month ago and on this very sweltering day in California, we decided to turn on our central air conditioning. Upon doing so, termites began pouring out of the vents and onto our floors, carpets, and walls. We have since shut all of the vents (that we can) but we are continuing to find stragglers running around at random. We gave a list to our building's manager, and discussed the issue with her, and she is absolutely reluctant about even NOTIFYING the owner of the building, who she said is a "little old lady" who will not be willing to tent the whole building and put everyone out for a few nights while the debugging occurs.
With the weather as it is today, we cannot turn on our air, and living with bugs is absolutely disgusting, and frankly not going to be an option for very long.
So our question to anyone with any kind of exterminating experience, or anyone of legal council is (without knee-jerk reactions, please):
What can we do to 1) rid the apartment of bugs at least to the point where they are not coming out into the living spaces and we can use our air vents; 2) how can we legally insure that the things we need done to the apartment will be taken care of; and 3) what are our rights as renters, what is the building manager (or even the owner for that matter) responsible for handling, and what is the best course of action for us to take from here?
Thank you all for your help. This truly is disgusting - and if need be, we'll likely begin looking for places to move to as soon as possible (if they absolutely refuse to do anything and force us to live in bug-infested, sweltering and, frankly, unlivable conditions).
