Is it possible that religion had a role in our survival as species?

Early ages. Big guy sees weak guy with meat. Big guy kills weak guy and gets meat. Weak guy realises it would be better to group together with other weak guys to avoid being minced.

However, when everyone is weak, there will be always someone who will be a little stronger to be the new (not so much) big guy and the cicle would restart.

Weak guy then thinks (he is smarter) a way to keep not-so-big guy in a lash. He says that he had a dream where an Invisible Great Omnipotent Dude told him he would protect him against all harm. Next day, not-so-big guy is killed by a boar. Everyone is in awe with the weak guy new invisible friend, who (obviously) killed the bad guy, so everyone follows him because of fear and at the same time, because i-GOD would protect weak guy's friends.

Weak guy then sets whatever rules he pleases, which if broken, will piss off i-GOD, and that includes not killing weak guys, but instead, feeding them. Whoever follow the rules, not only won't be killed by hellish boars, but will have 100 virgins in a place called paradise, after death.

The tribe prosper and lasts longer than other competing tribes. And that allows weak (and smarter) guys prosper even more, in the evolutionary level, to become the lovely priests we know today. Does it make any sense?

..

EDIT: Hey, why the downvotes? I don't like the idea of religion either, but I am certain that people around here are be able to discuss something rationally. ಠ_ಠ
