Welcome Home
A little back story:
This was a piece for a contest. The prompt was to end the poem with the line "Open your heart. I'm coming home." And the contest holder urged us to stray away from cliche.
Here is what I came up with:
With these tools I lay to rest, the bodies of the worst, the best.
Steady hands and sound precision, I long to make my first incision.
When I'm done, and finally break, with glee my hands begin to shake.
My work, my life, my soul desire: To bury the dead their beloved admire.
And then it came, the call, the song. That day for which that I've most longed.
My beloved. My soul, my wife. Took upon her, her own life.
That is where I am meant to be, I in her, and her in me.
So here we sit, at last alone. To open your heart, I'm coming home.
