Trying to get an old 80gb zune to work.

Hey All, sorry for the wall of text in advance and would appreciate anyone's expertise/advice into how to salvage my music collection that I lost. I recently stumbled upon this sub since I was trying to get my old 2009 80gb zune to work. Short backstory - I was using it for a few years without fail, then when trying to put more songs onto the Zune, I had inadvertently maxed out the HDD. From what I remember, I thought this bricked the Zune and ended up starting to use my smart phone for music instead. Despite the Zune not working, it always had a place in my heart and I couldn't bear to throw it out even after several moves. Fast forward to today, I lost my personal music collection due to some bad PC HDDs. Devastated from losing about 10 years of collected music and countless hours creating playlists, I racked my brain on if I had any backups. On a whim (and mostly desperation), I decided to try my zune which at the time still had a very large percentage of my music collection. I left it charging with no real hope, and came back a few days later with the screen actually coming on and all my songs (allegedly) still intact! There are a few issues with this:

  1. The OS works extremely slow, like clicking something takes over half a minute to be recognized. I assume this is due to the HDD being maxed out. The screen also artifacts so that I see items from the previous menu.
  2. Battery is kind of shot. It works for maybe 30 minutes without being plugged in and takes at least 48+ hours of charging from an outlet before the OS will come back on
  3. When plugging it in to my PC, I sometimes can get it recognized by my PC. I was able to download the zune software from this sub and get it installed without an issue. Can't sign in or update, but I assume that is because Microsoft has stopped supporting the zune/software. When plugging in my Zune, the Zune itself comes up with an error itself: "To Start, update the Zune software on your PC at www.zune.net/setup". Using that in a browser just redirects you to "https://www.xbox.com/id-ID/", and doesn't seem to be much help. If I press "OK" on the zune, it finally let's me see the device on my PC and sync relationship comes up as "guest".
  4. The other issue is that after I get my computer to recognize the zune and the software sees it in the bottom left corner as a device, after a minute the software on PC has an error, "READ ERROR: The Zune software can't access important data on your device. Try disconnecting and reconnecting it. If the problem persists, contact customer support." When I click "OK", the device becomes unrecognizable by the software.
  5. When I do get the Zune to be recognized by the software, I cannot change the sync relationship; every time I click on it, the software on the PC just flashes but doesn't do anything.

At one point, I had the Zune recognizing as an external HDD just for the purposes of opening different folders in explorer, with the help of the Zune Explorer software. I originally thought that was going to allow me to extract my songs, but I missed the fine print and realized I needed the Zune software installed to be able to move my data on and off, hence here I am. Certainly disappointed that I could see every single song on my Zune, but trying to drag them out into my PC's explorer gave me a simple "you don't have permission" error.

My ultimate goal is to just salvage my songs/playlists/photos/movies off the HDD. I tried looking at some Zune HDD replacement videos to see if it comes out looking like a typical HDD that had SATA connections and I could plug it directly into my MOBO, but the few videos I saw, looks like that isn't the case. If I could just get past the READ ERROR from #4 above and change the sync relationship to Owner instead of guest, I may be able to extract the data off. If I could get all of that onto my PC, I would definitely love to then put some time and money into replacing the screen (cracked from one of the moves a while back, I assume), replacing the battery, and replacing the HDD so I can actually use it again.

Any advice on how to tackle this?

UPDATE AFTER A WEEK:

So after 6 days of meticulously messing with it and plugging it/unplugging it 400 times to get it to talk, I finally got the Zune 80 to communicate and I can go through the device on windows explorer after following the info here: https://makezine.com/2006/11/23/how-to-copy-data-off-a-mi/. I was actually able to delete about 3gbs which allows the device to actually respond in real time when I plug it in for the Zune software to recognize it, but I still get the "you do not have permission" error when trying to copy/paste songs from the Zune onto my PC. The OS on the device is also extremely slow and unusable. When plugging the Zune into my PC and loading up the zune software, the Zune is recognized and it takes about 20 seconds for the error to show up "Zune Player Isn't Responding, Your device isn't responding. Please disconnect it, restart it, then try again. Error C00D124D." I've done this many times trying to get a different result. The unfortunate definition of insanity.

It sounds like the HD is bad, even though I am able to go through it in windows explorer and delete files, and Zune software is able to see those files being deleted. I can even browse through the songs/albums in the Zune software but cannot play any or "copy to my collection". When I set one up to copy, Sync sits at 0% and I ultimately get the Error C00D124D that I mentioned before.

If anyone has any helpful hints on how to get the Zune to finally allow me to extract that songs, it would be greatly appreciated.
