On a wondrous but wayward world
in a cosmos of calamitous comprehension
lives, what one might, if one could,
be described,
as a species obsessed.

You see,
these curious creatures, appear to be
completely consumed
internally
and as far as has been observed
have perplexing, puzzling,
subjugated thoughts,
not seen elsewhere in the universe.

Does this make them special?
As far as we can tell,
yes,
but ironically, it’s not due to uniqueness
rather, an inability to escape
the space
between their cranium and spinal cord.

These bizarre products of evolution are
an enigma to science;
even their most pressing biological needs,
even survival itself, seem secondary considerations
to the constant and exclusive obsessions
of these beings,
being obsessive.

This conundrum seems
universal to their kind
all over their planet, these
ponderous creatures,
although bodily free, seem constricted,
confined by mind,
and not by anything greater
than their own perception.

Why they exist
in a relative panopticon
is not yet known to the sciences
but has cast galactic bewilderment
on our theories
of evolved species.
