Over a cup of coffee (Writing Prompt: Making Conversation)
Those troubled lawyers talking to their clients in the corner
At the bar, tired truckers downing pints of liquor
And Alfredo, like always, painted a smile on his face
When he saw us coming in through that door
The place hasn’t changed
The numbers have waned but
I still like it,
Feels like we’re at home.
Alfredo! Two beers?
No. Coffee for me.
Then coffee for me too.
How old is Alfredo?
60, maybe.
And how old is his son?
How’d I know?
Figured he’d lend a hand to his old man.
Speaking of, how’s Gina?
College, University, a job?
She’s a florist downtown;
Part-time, sure, but I’m proud
that she’s moved out
and away from me
Well, my little angel’s turning sixteen this august
Those devils grow up so fast
Remember that one time
we got drunk on the beer you stole
I pissed on your dad’s automobile
and slashed three of the wheels
at sixteen.
We were crazy back then
crazy enough to cross the river of dreams
and never come back again.
Crazy enough to live at the bottom of the ocean
and crazier still to fly so close to the sun.
But I love the crazy in you
And I do too,
but I don’t like the crazy in me.
Who does?
We just dust it off.
But it was fun while it lasted
It was volatile, fast, and you held my hand
through it all.
So how’d -
We were young, passionate, honestly,
I’d have rather been with you,
I was in the wrong place,
You in the wrong time.
How did you-
I was chasing day,
and you were chasing the night.
I'm not saying there wouldn’t be fights
Heck! There’d be too many but,
But?
I loved you.
How? How did you find me?
I didn’t.
You did.
