New Roommates
I stood at the foot of the kitchen
When you slammed the door
Gripping the knob, I pondered calling out to your
Slowly minimizing back
Silence had never been so loud
Stillness became my best friend for a few moments
We found ourselves together, anxious beings
Too scared to make a sound
As though we had snuck in hours after curfew
Soon after, the house became filled with chatter
The living room spoke of how we danced
On the night of our first Christmas together
The bathroom reminded the residents of the smell of perfume
That once circulated the halls
The stairs regaled of the time you stepped down
Dressed in a red dress for your sister’s wedding
The floor chimed in, laughing as it remembered the thud of my jaw
Practically hitting it on the head
Do not be fooled
I am not lonely
Because Loneliness greets me every morning
Around 12 P.M., Emptiness rings the doorbell of our front door
Inviting itself in and taking place on our couch
At dinner time, Denial pulls up a chair next to me
Commenting on how it thought the meal was great
Then, when I feel ready for bed, Nostalgia takes place
Where you once did
We all miss you
The other day, I heard the record player say
“Her laughter was the best music that was ever played in this house.”
Disagreement was nowhere to be found
Be advised that if your path ever leads back here
There is always a spot reserved at the table
And most importantly, my heart

This was an unforgettable poem with very intense emotion that the reader could definitely feel. I felt that sense of loss. The “new roommates” being Loneliness and Denial really struck a chord within me, especially with the line where Denial claimed to have enjoyed a meal. This was a nice read.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words!
