Help with catalina upgrade, i7 6700K, MSI Z170A, Gigabyte RX 5700 XT

SOLVED

IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3

After getting some good input here yesterday I am now stuck and looking for more input. I have created a clone on an external drive and updated this clone to Catalina using a macbook pro which boots fine there. I removed the nVidia drivers, installed clover and set up my EFI according to the Intel Vanilla guide found on the sidebar, the EFI can be found here.

I have tried with and without PIKERA as some have suggested the latest version of whatevergreen does not need it anymore (using 1.3.5), also tried with and without whatevergreen as some has suggested the 5700XT only worked without whatevergreen for them.

On the top there is a photo of the verbose output I get to see.

Any idea what to try next?

------

Edit:

I have since tried a few things:

  • first of all, it boots fine with the nvidia 970 gtx
  • i have tried a more torough merge of my old working high sierra config.plist with the new freshly made using the current intel vanilla guide - no change
  • i have tried my old efi folder with updated kexts and changes to config.plist for catalina (only major difference is it uses FakeSMC instead of VirtualSMC in the new version). It now boots to a black screen with screen off, after whats feeling like a minute or two my screens switch on and I can see the mouse-cursor but nothing else. In the meanwhile my local network collapses/freezes until I switch the machine off.

I still kind of feel like the approach with the new freshly created EFI is the more promising. But I am genuinely stuck after a full day of googling and searching and reading guide after guide and post after post. Again, the system boots fine with the nvidia card.

edit2:

Having run out of options I figured I could just as well update to 10.15.2 Beta 3 and give it a shot. No difference. nVidia card boots fine, 5700 XT fails with and without WEG and/or PIKERA flag.

edit3:

Tried iMac 19,2 and 19,1 in SMBIOS, no change to the symptom. Really nothing changes the symptom unless I switch GPU to the nVidia one, then it boots just fine. Also the 5700 is confirmed working fine in Windows.

edit 4 - SUCCESS!

finally got it working. It turns out - and I am not 100% certain, but it seems that was the case - it did not work because I had both my monitors connected via DisplayPort! At one point I was making a minor adjustment in my plist with only one display connected on the first boot, and it started fine! *facepalm*
