eGPU Issues on Pop OS
Short Version: Trying to get a RX 480 working over Thunderbolt on Pop OS for gaming.
Long Version: I have started to experiment with a few linux distros recently as Windows 10 is just not that great of an experience. Pop OS is the latest I've tried and so far I love it. Everything works out of the box unlike other distros. Only problems were with the laptop speakers (which I fixed) and eGPU (setup).
I have a Lenovo Yoga C930 (specs below) and a Razer Core X with an AMD Radeon RX 480. In windows I just installed the amd drivers, plugged in the Razer Core X and it worked. In Pop OS I decided to plug in the Core to see whether it would be detected in the Thunderbolt settings. It was and I authorized it like it prompted me to do.
Using hwinfo the OS recognized under graphics that is was an "ATI Ellesmere [RX 470/480/560/570/580]". When connecting a HDMI display to the eGPU, the mouse freaked out but the second display did work. I unconnected the display and decided to see whether the eGPU would work in a game environment. I installed Minecraft Java Edition and created a new world. When pressing F3 it showed it was using Intel UHD graphics.
I decided that I would need to install some drivers as there might not be any for the RX 480 currently installed. Tried installing AMD GPU PRO for Ubuntu but there were errors. Tried to try my luck by restarting with eGPU plugged in but now it won't even boot under any circumstances.
I've erased the Pop OS partition and am going to reinstall using my USB. I want some guide into how to get this setup as I feel that I'm quite close to doing so. Any tips?
