Board wipe vs. adventure cards?

I'm curious why Flame Sweep is able to destroy Rimrock-Knight when it's cast as an adventure not as a creature. Can't find any useful information anywhere. Unless it's because the instant was failed due to it's target having been destroyed by Flame Sweep? I would think it would still be put in exile instead of the graveyard.
