Help Me Find a book I desperately want to finish

Around 1999-2004 I started reading a science fiction book about humans migrating to a new world. As I started getting into it, someone stole it from me. Here’s what I remember from what I read:

Chapter One overviews the protagonist preparing to leave Earth and is at a campfire or something with other people leaving Earth.

Chapter Two she(?) is on the ship and the solar sail is damaged or kids are playing on it?

I thought the title had Red and Moon in it but I’ve never found the book using those titles. I remember my English teacher saying the author was a famous female author.

I also remember the book being gray and having maroon moons somewhere on it.
