Road Tripping - Safe Places to Sleep in the Car?

Headed through the Southwest over the next few weeks. I come into El Paso tomorrow. Just wanna get the locals perspective:

How do the local police handle sleeping on the streets?

Anyone know good spots to sleep or at least some places to avoid?

Also, hit me up if you are interested in hanging out with a complete stranger. I'd love to grab a beer or some food, go for a hike, see a movie, play a board game... anything really!
