Dele and his “bad seasons”
Ok I can’t be the only one that remembers things going this way. Obviously opinions can be swayed heavily by the media, especially over a long period of time such as a few years. If I recall correctly, Dele had his best season a few years ago when he was playing behind the striker (as he is now). This is when his goal tally was very high for a midfielder (18) in 2016/17. This is when all of these reports started that said he “peaked” at 21. During the next few seasons, dele played well and a good deal of us defended him even though his goal and assist tallies dropped, because Poch stopped playing him behind the striker every match and started him in the wide positions of the front 3 behind the striker. He still played well, just not as many goal contributions. Perhaps not as well as 2016/17, but not by a mile poor seasons. It makes sense the tide of opinion was turned by other fans as they aren’t watching spurs matches week in and week out, so it’s very easy to see less goal contributions and hear one or two pundits say dele is worse for your own head to start thinking that way. Lo and behold, Jose steps in and starts playing Dele behind the striker, and he starts banging them in. Suddenly dele is “back again”. If we remember Dele wasn’t the only player Poch played weirdly out of position, as Lucas came out and said this week. Now I could be misguided as even Jose had comments such as the Deles brother thing, and it is true that he hasn’t played 100% as well as that 2016/17 season, but that can be said for a lot of players who are still respected now. Sorry for the long post and please call me out if you think I’m wrong, I just remember it happening this way. COYS
TL:DR dele has been played out of position since 16/17. Jose steps in, puts him in the right position, and suddenly he’s “good again”
