Hit and run karma

Transportation

TL;DR: my spouse was involved in a hit and run and we identified the guilty party within 15 minutes.

Yesterday, my spouse was rear-ended at a stoplight at 1604/Bandera and the guilty party fled the scene. We were feeling pretty frustrated since her car is brand new and that we would be stuck paying for the damage (her dashcam dropped off the windshield upon impact).

Thankfully, after waiting about 15 minutes for the police to arrive in a nearby parking lot, a very kind gentleman and his wife showed up and gifted us with photos of the perpetrator’s license plate and dashcam footage of the accident. The police were able to pull all the driver’s information at the scene (they were fully insured).

So, what would’ve been a simple fender bender has now turned into a possible felony hit and run conviction for the guilty party, as well as possibly dropped insurance coverage, fines, and loss of license. The officer and our insurance company believe that the only reason a fully insured motorist would leave the scene of a minor accident is possible intoxication.

Folks, it isn’t difficult to do the right thing in regards to driving. Don’t drink and drive, carry insurance, hold a valid license, and keep the vehicle registered. Most importantly, do not leave the scene of an accident. In 2019, there are traffic light cameras, dashcams, cell phones, and good Samaritans that are usually eager to help.
