What do you do in you professional life, take photos of Bigfoot?

Seriously, can you post a blurrier picture? Because we can almost tell this is a jar of brown liquid. Just a little more fuzzing and we might believe it's oil, or heavy water from a nuclear fusion reaction, or unicorn piss after she was out all weekend on a gin bender while only eating asparagus.

Looks like crystallization to me. Possibly Bigfoot though? Hard to say. If you do eat it please don’t sue me.

Put a light behind it so it is illuminated, without a quality picture I am unable to determine whether it is maple syrup or used motor oil.

Edit* Also take my upvote for picture of bigfoot!

Definately a Sasquatch residue. (Sasquatch is Canadian cousin of Bigfoot)

52
WaffleliskBritish Columbia•

It's actually "Samsquanch" here in Canada

26
GrottyBoots•

"Sasquatch" is perfectly cromulent.

Did "Samsquanch" exist before Trailer Park Boys and/or Bubbles?

11
T-Minus9Ontario•

That's the maritime sub-species you're thinking of

They must of scraped it up to make a quick buck while staging Sasquatch's suicide.

For the folks at home in the movie Strange Wilderness a group of stoners go on a road trip to find Sasquatch and save their failing nature show. They do end up finding him, but they turn him into Swiss cheese because he startles them. Though they need to save their show. So they say the stumbled upon the Sasquatch's cave, but it was too late because the Sasquatch had gotten depressed from years of isolation and hung himself.

Mold (Falsur mold?) commonly grows on the surface like this, it is harmless and non-toxic. You can boil it, scrape it off, strain it out and carry on with your day. Maple syrup never spoils.

That's good to know. I was once eating pancakes in the dark, poured out my maple syrup and starting eating away. I noticed something was different with the texture but carried on eating. Finally I turned the lights on and I see my plate with green fuzzy bits all over it. I didn't get sick at all but now I always check my syrup before I pour.

Don't shame eat pancakes, man... Turn the lights on and embrace yourself.

Be proud brother man!

same with honey, good for longer than you'll be alive.

There are jars of honey from Ancient Egypt that haven't gone bad

Not quite non-toxic, but relatively safe. It also doesn't generally produce its toxins within a growing medium such as maple syrup, and boiling/straining works great to remove.

ditto...asked folks at a sugarbush about it. Pretty normal for the 200L drums they have that they open to get fuzzy on top. Really doesn't matter. They run it through sieve fine enough to catch stuff customers might notice and heat it up. good as new.

No prob. If you refrigerate opened maple syrup it will prevent this from happening. I made a video years ago of the process to make syrup in your backyard if you are ever so inclined: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeTgbXNNBCs

I believe maple syrup does spoil though no? Various online maple forums have told me it does, perhaps they mean the sap not the concentrated syrup. Ive had syrup sit in my fridge for over a year and still be good

Not a professional maplesucker, but...

Picture's out of focus, so I can't tell you for sure. Blotchy, white, fuzzy = mold. Otherwise, it's sugar crystals. The mold isn't harmful. If it is mold, I would say strain it with a cheesecloth. If you or anyone you know has an Instant Pot or similar that has a sterilize function, you can sterilize the jar, re-boil and sterilize the syrup, and put it back in the jar. That's a lot of effort, though.

If this is maple syrup from Vermont, why did you post the question on r/canada?

10
LEDponixOP•

Vermont doesn't have a Maple leaf in its flag

19

From what kind of tree do you think Maple syrup comes from?

8
MacaqueOfTheNorth•

You have an extra preposition in there.

4
MrGuttFeeling•

Maple syrup comes from the secretions of maple bugs.

Always ask an expert.

Maple syrup properly made can never go moldy.. it would be similar to honey which has been found in Egypt 2000 years old still edible.

8
bob4apples•

I don't know if your maple syrup is moldy or not but I do know that you took that photo from too close.

Back up to at least 1m and zoom in closely to check if the photo is blurry. Crop it before posting.

6
Coffeedemon•

Is it fuzzy or is it crystaly? There's your first question and it isn't getting answered with that photo.

5
brittybear94•

If you’re questioning if something is mouldy, the precautionary thing to do would just be to toss it. Better safe than sorry.

4†
Verix19•

Uhh, that's maple syrup, you apologize for those comments asap.

27
widget30•

FYI the best place to store maple syrup is in the freezer. It really slows down the crystalization process. Edit: why the downvote? Don't knock it till you try it...

3
cleederOntario•

You monster.

2
widget30•

I'm dead serious. That's where mine lives. It does not freeze or even stiffen up. There's no fats or oils in maple syrup.

3
Buzztank•

if its furry its mold. Run it through a cheese cloth. But it kinda just looks like sugar crystals.

3
Dusk_Soldier•

Syrup doesn't go bad.

2†
LibrarianOfBabel•

This is incorrect. I've had mouldy syrup before. Honey doesn't go bad, maybe you were thinking of that.

5
chejrwSaskatchewan•

It can go bad if it wasn’t properly concentrated to start with. As long as it’s a least 60 on the Brix scale it will never go bad as it’s too hygroscopic for microorganisms to grow

2
danabnormal_•

normally maple syrup is about 30% water, which is enough for it to spoil

OP I just had this happen to me last week. Ate a nice stack of pancakes, 90% through look down at the plate to see a long white almost green tint of plastic texture looking whateverthefuck. Heart stops - go to kitchen and look at my bottle of brown gold and see the whole surface containing this what I believed to be mold. Spent next couple hours waiting to get sick but was fine. As another person said here it's a mold but harmless. Still thew that bottle away though :(
