[Tech] External HDD issues with latest Xbox OS

I've been having some pretty significant external HDD problems with the latest Xbox OS. I've got a One X running non preview and as of the last week or so the external HDD glitches on it. I've got a 4TB raid setup in an external case.

Started when the HDD wouldn't show up. I thought it was the drive so tested on Pc. No issues and reformatted it, then able to see it again on Xbox. I then went to re-download 100+ games, and left it. When I turned my Xbox on it was showing that it hadnt downloaded anything and the HDD wasn't showing. I unplugged the drive and replugged it in, and did a restart of the Xbox. Suddenly all the games showed up - so it had downloaded on the background.

Since then I found in instant on the drive would not show up when I turned it on, and yet in full shut down there is no problem. The drive is consistently showing.

I can only assume that there is some issue with the software. Any ideas or thoughts on what could be happening here?

Don't Forget To Try These Basic Troubleshooting Steps First:

  1. Power Cycle - Instructions here. Press and hold the Xbox Logo on your console for about 8-10 seconds until the console shuts off.

  2. Check the Xbox Live Service Status here!

  3. Consult Xbox.com/support - They have a wide variety of topics, and tons of support available.

  4. Contact Xbox Support - They have chats, phone calls, emails, everything.

  5. Search - Use google, use the sidebar, use the forums. Failure to search before posting may result in your post being removed.

  6. Consult our wiki - It's highly likely that your issue is there.

Have you tried resetting your console?

After one of the recent updates (non-preview), I could not download games, update games, or even start a game.

I unplugged my external hard drives, reset the console, then plugged my drives back in. Everything works now. Haven't had any problems since.

Yes I've tried this but the issue returns when I reenable instant on.

Hmmm... I'm not sure. Was hoping my suggestion would help.

I also have a RAID drive enclosure, but I don't use Instant-On. I use Power Saver Mode.

My hard drive enclosure doesn't seem to like Instant-On and the enclosure power cycles constantly when Instant-On is enabled. Didn't want my drives to dies prematurely from spinning up/down constantly.

Yep I've gone with power saver and thinking that's prob best too. But bit gutted at the same time as to what is going on there.

I have two external drives on my one x, a seagate 1.5 tb, and a 500 gb drive in an amazon basics enclosure. The seagate works fine 100% of the time, the one in the enclosure exhibits the same issue you mention.

I had to disable instant on, or else I would have to unplug and plug back in the drive every single time I came back to play. It's annoying to have to go through the boot up sequence every time, but at least it works every time.

Thanks for the reply. It's just so odd because this has worked fine for me for well over 12 months. So it's quite strange, that the problem has suddenly arisen.

That is strange. My drive did it from the get go.
