Reddit, how do you stay sane when there's a mouse in the house (and you have incompetent apartment management)?
Reddit, my roommate and I live in a ground floor apartment. Mice freak us out. Yes, they're cute, but that doesn't help much when you get them in your house. We feel totally violated. Have the mice been on the counter? Do we need to rewash the dishes?
We've caught three mice already and also found and plugged a possible entry point near the dryer vent, but we can't stop worrying that there are additional entry points, that mice are creeping around, hiding in every cup, container, etc. We jump at every noise.
How do you stay sane? I know this is a very minor problem to have in the grand scheme of things, but we find it very stressful. (And, yes, we're girls, germaphobic ones at that.)
Also--even though we pay an arm and a leg for rent--our apartment maintenance and office staff are totally useless and incompetent. I submitted a maintenance request asking them to look for holes in the laundry closet as well as the utility closet and mentioned that we caught all mice in the laundry closet. The maintenance guy set a trap in the utility closet (where we already had two traps and have caught no mice). Oh, and get this, he neglected to bring his own bait for the trap, so he searched through our cupboards until he discovered my nearly brand new jar of peanut butter. I know this because he left it on the counter with the lid off. No sign of a knife, so who knows what he used to get the peanut butter out. His finger? I tossed the peanut butter in the trash, and I'm pissed about it. Yes, please come into my apartment and invite mice to dine on the kitchen counter. Seriously gross! On the bright side, he left a note stating that he didn't find any holes in the closet. Apparently the one we found must have evaded him. Either that or we have mice who've read Harry Potter and learned how to disapparate.
tl;dr: My roommate and I had mice in our apartment. It freaks us out. How do you deal with it mentally? We've set traps and plugged holes ourselves due to incompetent apartment management, but we're still freaked out (and angry with our apartment maintenance staff).
