Most of my knitted gifts have a “personal touch” woven in 😂

Either mine or my cat’s... though I try to limit those.

And, if you’re anything like me, knit your hair right into that hat!

Pretty color and quick to knit. Only had 188yds and I really didn’t want to make something for myself knowing I’d always think of a messy relationship. Made a beanie for my office white elephant and my team loved it. My coworker who got it really seemed happy, and was touched it was handmade. Also [made a cute lil tag ](https://imgur.com/gallery/xKw3hJW) (regarding the helmet note, we work for a bikeshare company)

Great hat, great story, great tag! I love when yarn finds its place.

Years ago I did a similar thing with an early model iPod. I passed it on to someone who wanted one. Also did it with the china we got as a wedding gift. Both things are happily being used by their new owners.

Might be worth posting this as a standalone question post on this subreddit; people are pretty helpful and I'm sure you'll get more responses.

I wouldn’t say there is a specific length. This pattern (for the adult large) said to make the 1x1 ribbing 2.5” but I went with around 1.75” since I don’t like folded brims. And then the pattern repeat was supposed to happen 8 times, but I stopped early at around 6 and began the decrease. It’s all about preference and sizing.

Because I didn’t know who would end up with the hat, I kept it on the shorter side. While a man might like a longer hat with more slack, it might be completely oversized for a woman. Try to find a happy medium.

How long should a hat be by length (average)

Thank you so much for posting this! I was having trouble coming up with a white elephant gift and have no idea why I didn’t think of knitting a hat! Thanks for letting me borrow such a great idea 😊

Needed a gift for the office White Elephant. The prompt was regifted, so I knit with some yarn an ex gave me that I’ve avoided at all costs! Knit in one day!
