Just wait for Elon to unveil the Tesla Model B cruise liner

You know how flying is one of the worst things to do for the environment? You know what’s worse? Cruise Ships. About 3x as bad.

I can see the appeal, but Jesus, I hope we stop ourselves at some point

Who needs cities when you can be stuck in the middle of the ocean instead.

Don't forget about the rampant norovirus, because there is literally human shit covering every visible surface!

will be much more expensive if people working it are treated fairly

I mean have you seen new cruise ships? They are basically larger than many of the cities DN's currently stay in haha.

And I'm not talking about today's audience, I'm talking about designated ships with fellow DN's... Doesn't that sound awesome?

Regarding the environment, it doesn't have to be constantly moving, and in the renewable energy future even if we don't get to electrify these ships the effect would be tiny compared to today's situation.

So being stuck weeks or months on end with a bunch of wealthy twats, slowly going mad with cabin fever from being cooped up with my laptop below deck, while also destroying the planet?Where do I sign up?

For the most part, you just described what it's like to be on an aircraft carrier... Join the Navy.

I had never heard of it. Indeed a very similar idea to mine, but I imagined it more horizontally expanded. I suppose their model is the only one where the cost is low enough to make it feasible. If I were to make such a thing, I'd consider sustainable and cheap materials like making it from plastic waste, to make it wider and allow for fewer stories, and perhaps for parks etc.

Hah, I think you and I were on the same wavelength when posting. Do you remember Freedom Ship?

I don't know, it might be hard to convince people to live on a floating nuclear fission reactor.

Here's a very similar idea I posted on another thread.

So it's a really really big ship, the size of a medium town. In order for that to be possible, it consists of a few dozens of pretty big ships that unite like a puzzle. That way it can pass through canals like Suez, by breaking up. Because of its size, it almost isn't at all shaky, so you could even forget that you're on a ship. The ship can expand on demand for real estate and according to the population growth.

A nuclear fission plant generates power for the ship to operate, at least until fusion plants become a thing.

On the ship, it is a town, which operates like a society of its own. Every member has his own job, apartment etc. Free public education and healthcare are available. It is car free, so commuting happens by bike and by public transport. Metro is relatively easy to make because you don't have to dig for it, just plan ahead when building the ship. Anyone can join the ship (acquire real estate on it) for peri

It sounds like my idea of hell to be frank. For me living in another place - even for just a few months - is ideally a way to get a taste of some of the culture, meet locals, get outdoors in the area.

For nomads who mostly want familiar surroundings at a higher standard of living than they can get at home - i.e. those who want to mostly hang out with other expats and can afford a nicer apartment than they can in their hometown, but also do a little sightseeing, it might be ideal.

The cost of going full Waterworld will be astronomical. And to be blunt, no private company will get agreement to build nuclear powered ships which is what this will need.

I did transpacific cruise this October and got pretty good unlimited Internet all the way on the ship. But connection speed was quite annoying and price is too high for nomads. It was about 350$ for 18 days per one device. So there is no convenient way to travel and work on cruise ship today. And Im looking forward and waiting impatiently for Elon's Internet. It should solve connection issues and many people will travel and work best way. Because of cruise ships are really made for such kind of nomads thing :)

I do love this idea but the naysayers have some valid points.

Cost- Is going to be the biggest factor. First, to building it, it will need to big . Real estate would have to be expensive.

Speed and comfort - this thing would have to ride the shoreline as it travels around, no open ocean. It would have to be very slow, built on a barge and electric run predominantly by solar arrays that are deployed on the vessel and around it via cables and fold out arrays that float directly on the ocean. Think floating football fields of solar arrays.

Logistics - your shipping and supply lines are going to constantly change as you move from location to location. So materials could go from good to scare really quickly.

Income - the ship itself would have to make money and that would likely be generated from tourism and people wanting to visit an engineering marvel.

There was a plan years ago, called Freedom Ship, that explored this idea but I think they ran out of money and some fraud happe

It sort of exists, but is expensive. https://aboardtheworld.com

It’s a permanent residence cruise ship where you buy your accommodation. There were several others in development years ago and they all... went under... before they could... get off the ground.

The internet gods are scorning me now.

Anyways, it’s a thing but remember, a normal cruise ship offsets the cost by having 1000-3000 people paying 500-10000 a week to be on board. And your internet connection would pretty much suck for anything beyond emails. Maybe if you were a prolific author it might be a good solution.

But the perm residence ship is in the millions to purchase a room.

I think it could be pretty fun and have an interesting dynamic of working while at sea and then using the island time to pull you away from work.

Before I went on my last cruise I came across this video of a guy that lives on Royal Caribbean ships
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcBzOesw7sc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcBzOesw7sc)

I had this similar idea but for a Tallship, works on sail/wind energie so it's a little better for the environment and it's a lot more fun!

In the coming years we are going to have worldwide internet access thanks to Elon Musk and SpaceX's Startlink project, and it seems like a floating city moving between physical locations while providing first class amenities is the dream scenario for many remote workers.

So what do you guys think about the future of DN cruise ships? Who needs stationary cities anyway?
