As an Ohio State fan this is very exciting news. Apparently Watts and Ransom are the two we need worry about, which are the two recruits Hafley visited this week. Apparently during the Watts in-home visit not but three days ago Hafley told Watts he was going to be around for at least another year as he was going to hold out for a bigger opportunity source. Kind of a dick move by Hafley to say that while negotiating with BC.
I thnk it's shitty to leave after 1 year.
Read he had a clause in his contract about a HC offer. He also commented on wanting to be a HC in several interviews I've read. He didn't commit to anything long term. Like it or not, this is an incredibly mercenary business - it's disingenuous at it's root, we all know that.
I dislike it, but the program is going to have to adapt to this type of thing. We most have stability at the head coach position, and I would like to see Coach Day ask for two - three year commitments going forward, but it is what it is.
In an important way this is good for us, having position and assistant coaches go on to bigger jobs will help attract other top talent.
I have no qualms with him taking a job after one year. Sucks but I get it. I just dislike telling a recruit you are going to be there when you are working on a deal to not be there.
Definitely not something I believe coaches should do either. They should be real careful about that or get a rightful reputation as a liar.
Major scumbag move to tell the recruit that and then do this. It’s annoying that he had nothing but failure in the NFL for years, comes to Ohio State, kills it, and then bails immediately. May BC crash and burn.
By most accounts, Hafley had 0 intention of taking the BC job 3 days ago. BC bumped the offer last night and here we are. How dare a guy make a move that he feels is best for his future...
I wish Hafley and BC nothing but the best.
Edit: I imagine with this logic you were furious that OSU would hire a man like Al Washington who would have such low standards that he’d leave UM after just one season...
I'm not upset about him leaving, but c'mon its shitty to lie about it
I think it's shitty to leave any of the 10 positions after 1 year. It's worse when it's a coordinator. It's an awful situation for recruiting and continuity.
I don't like lying to recruits about this stuff either, but to be fair... maybe he wasn't lying at the time he said it. I'm waiting to see the offer - in the thread last night announcing this I wrote only a crazy offers has all of this making sense to me. Something like a huge commitment from BC, large assistant pool, and HC salary near or over $4M.
If something like a $2.5-$3M salary is reported I'll remain confused.
Having said that... I see no reason to wish hate towards BC for hiring a coach. Or to trash Hafley just because he's gone. Not unless you were posting he was trash all along... in which case, fair.
Sour grapes man. Enjoy the season that he helped deliver. We're better off having had him here than not.
The story is that things fell apart with BC so he said he'd hold out, but then BC caved to some demands... Similar to Schiano at Rutgers.

He is according to this article. Don't know when it was scheduled. Phillips has said he is still solid with OSU but Utah is closer to home and his family wanted him to check it out just in case.

tOSU's DB pipeline to the league started long before Hafley - Shawn Springs was the first of the current lineage, I think - and there's no reason it won't keep going long after. Yeah, the positional GOATs may have gone to FSU (Deion) and Miami (Reed), but consistent placements into the early rounds are a huge institutional credit.
Well yeah lol. It's still one of the best programs in the country and Ryan Day will replace him with Kerry Coombs anyway.
I really think it’s possible. He’s been with the Titans for a few years now and it’s not really going amazingly. NFL assistants don’t stay planted for too long anyways. I think he’d be willing to come back.
Yeah, I was definitely half joking because the rumors are flying. But on the other hand, you're right and I could definitely see him coming back to a place where he can thrive
Coombs was a recruiting machine.
Anything real with that? I’d love it but I haven’t seen anything more than hopeful fans suggesting Coombs
Nothing solid, was mostly joking/being hopeful. I could see it happening though.
Still nothing more than some talking but this is a good start
I am not so certain on the Coombs part. Apparently coaching in the NFL was a dream of his plus the Titans are in the thick of the playoff race which means he wouldn't be available until mid January at the earliest.
Was mostly joking with Coombs haha. Just being optimistic.
Go to some OSU fan sites and he is the #1 guy to most of them and the obvious and easy choice. It is a bigger long shot than people realize.
Oh I know haha. It's everywhere. A man can dream
No love for Chris ash?
Coombs fucking sucks, signed- A Notre Dame fan.
Thanks for your input
Really need to hit a home run with this hire though. We're probably losing 4 DBs this year so who ever is out there next year really needs to be coached .
Conspiracy theory: Chase Young saying he’s returning for his senior year is reverse recruiting. He’s trying to get a high profile DC to sign with OSU then bolt for a new job as soon as the ink is dry.
7D chess Ryan Day, you son of a bitch.
Apparently Clark Phillips is taking an OV to Utah
Yeah the article mentions that. Hopefully we can keep him and ransom as well.
Why wouldn’t they be sold? Look at all the DB’s OSU has in the league right now.
and the ones that are soon to be drafted
Lejond has it
Seriously, we were already a great secondary school before him. He was here for a season.
Exactly. What you’ve had a handful of “down” years total in these recruits lifetimes so it’s obvious you’re a top tier school. Crazy to think that the national championship game against Miami was right as these kids were 2-3 years old.
