[Resource] 2nd Review of Karmen Wells Creative Services - Screenplay Consultant

Since I saw u/JustOneMoreTake post his up I thought I'd do the same since she took a look at mine.

The Script: The Politics of Sex & Speed Dating

I have a weird history with this; it started out as a short I wrote that I wound up turning into a feature that was six interconnected shorts. A director who read it loved it but said it was unfilmmable because of that style; he suggested a unifying theme and a three-act format.

I took that feedback and developed it into more of a "Saint Elmo’s Fire” type ensemble comedy.

I spent a lot of time on this and got tons of feedback; it's super close to where I wanted it to be. Since this is probably what I'm going to use as the film I go all in and actually make, I wanted some finishing touches after not having even looked at it for four months or so.

The Feedback:

I've gotten feedback from tons of people, as well as using paid professional coverage, so I was half expecting the usual: scores, this is what's not working, congrats on finishing, yay.

What I got was an in-depth break down on what works, what could be picked up, what could be sweetened up and a script marked up with what could be punched up and where that corresponded to the notes. That helped more than anything else; it’s one thing to nit pick on little things but broader notes helped much more because they directly led back to the six pages of feedback I got.

This was a ground floor look at what's working and what wasn't from someone who wasn't jaded or a failed writer. This was "I'm enjoying this" and "this needs to be brought up." There was tons of compliments, which is never a bad thing, but they also came with “you’re doing this well but it could be better if you thought of x,y and z.”

Karmen also pointed out something big that a lot of writers, director and actors who’ve read this saw and didn’t think of and pointed it out; it’s helped me developed one of my minor characters significantly more and make a number of scenes where she’s pivotal to it significantly better because of it.

It was clear and concise; I really enjoyed not seeing someone focus on giving it a number and instead focusing on what could make this as good as it can be.

Overall:

Would recommend in a heartbeat. If I had paid for this sort of indepth look I’d be a highly satisfied customer who’d come back.

Awesome! I'm glad you also got good feedback. By the way, your script sounds very interesting. I can just imagine all the work you must have done to integrate 6 separate stories.

In case anyone is wondering, this is my review and this is Karmen's website, and all this got started because of this post.

Once I do another round with her advice I’ll shoot you a copy if you want; the final version of “One Night at Henry’s” versus this are so wild to compare because they’ve changed so radically (and I’ve improved a ton as a writer too)
