How to create silky/glassy pads

Not sure how else to describe the sound, but here is an example from 200% electronica (the pad in the intro) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6awzI2vOep4

I want to explore making some pads like this but haven't got very far. I am becoming pretty familiar with Sytrus in FL studio, and it seems to me that it should be able to make this sound. However I have been unable to achieve the silky/glassy effect. Anyone have ideas on what is giving it this quality?

it's also important that you play the right notes, sometimes you have the right sound but you don't realise because you are not playing the right chord. in this case it sounds like a major 7 chord with some octaves thrown in there.

it sounds like a voice patch on a ROMpler synth like the Korg M1 or Wavestation rather than your traditional saw / square waves. don't forget to add compression and some tape saturation for those GC vibes.

Thank you, this was great advice. I started with a super saw with a low cutoff and and added tons of reverb and saturation and got pretty close.

I did some playing around with a synth I have. The quickest way might be to take a polyphonic bass patch, play higher on the keys, raise the high-frequency cutoff (sometimes called cutoff or HPF) to allow more high frequencies in, and raise the release so that it fades out over a longer period of time.

Thanks for the idea, modulating the filter is definitely part of it!

This is from any old 80s string synth VSTi. All the chorus and FX turned up, multiple waveforms mixed to taste. Slow Attack, slow Decay, medium low Sustain and high Release. Low pass filter tied to main ADSR.

As previously noted, tonnes of reverb.

This cheap plugin will do the job admirably http://www.hollowsun.com/HS2/products/youknow/index.htm

There are patches / vsts that will make a similar synth sound, but it's also got a lot of reverb on it, Vahalla has some free ones you could try.
