Cannibalism in Jonestown?
Some time ago, I wrote a post about the podcast "Transmissions from Jonestown", and I asked some questions, among others, about alleged cannibalism in Jonestown.
I've spent some time looking into it, and I finally found the tape they (the podcast) took the audio from.
It's Q644, one of the tapes recovered from Jonestown. On the tape, Jones is talking about what would happen if they get invaded, he is suggesting for them to get more automatic weapons and such.
Then comes this in the summary of the tape:
" Another uncomfortable subject – cannibalism – arises immediately afterwards. Jones talks about eating one of the invaders, if it comes to that. He reminds the community that they have done it before. “Hell, we been through it. We shot ‘em and we ate ‘em, the other time round… [S]ome thought they had beef, some thought they had chicken, some thought they had fish.” He asks if anyone is bothered by that, but – since he adds that anyone who won’t join in the practice is “going to join the pot too” – no one admits to any reluctance. ".
Yikes! I wonder what situation he is talking about here. And, since Jones was known to not always tell the truth (or at least he had his own version of it), he could obviously be lying just to get people to agree to the suicide instead of resolving to cannibalism.
