Dyeing only the rim (on all sides)

I'm currently awaiting an order containing a clear translucent K1 Stål, with no stamp, that I intend to do a dye job on. While trying to figure out what kind of dye I want to do, I had the idea that I could dye only the rim. Like, MVP/Axiom style, except the entire width of the rim instead of half of it. The method I had in mind was to simply cut out vinyl plastic to cover the bottom and top of the flight plate and then simply submerge the whole disc in an iDye Poly solution.

Has anyone here ever tried doing a similar dye? What was the result?

Is this even a cool/good idea in the first place?

EDIT: Here's a concept image of the end result I'm envisioning. After dyeing the rim, I want to add a large Kastaplast logo on the disc. In my mind this looks pretty neat, but I have no idea if this would look goof irl.

What about a spin dye on the rim?

I don't have any spinning device to use for a spin dye. Plus, I want all sides of the rim (top, bottom and inside) to be dyed in a single color (no tone shifts) and doing a normal spin dye on the underside of the rim seems like a very difficult task (not to mention the inside of the rim).

Sounds like you’ll need to do a big dip with the contact paper and iDye like you said.

Alright. Well, I guess I'll give it a try.

My fiancee and I got one at Salvation Army for 5 bucks. Worked for about 15 discs before it just stopped spinning. Went to Goodwill and spent $15 on another one and it's lasted us about 2 years now. If this isn't the only disc you're going to dye, finding an old record player is 100% worth the investment.

Also, make sure you test to make sure it works while you're at the store. I think SA has a "all sales final" clause.

I've done something similar, trying to dye only the top and bottom of the flight plate. I posted a pic about it 22 days ago that you can go and look at (plus details linked on imgur.) I think if you're ok with the inside of the rim being dyed, then it should be fairly easy. As long as you cut carefully, and are diligent about pressing down the contact paper/vinyl onto each side of the flight plate, you should have a pretty good result. Idk what Kastaplast tooling on the flight plate is like but hopefully it's not too intrusive.

The results looked pretty good!

Yeah, I actually want the inside of the rim dyed, so that's not a concern. I'm usually quite pedantic, so I won't go through with the dye unless I'm 100% satisfied with the placement of the vinyl and its contact with the disc. Will probably need a lot of adjustments before I actually dye it.

The tooling seems to be far enough from the inside of the rim to not cause much of an issue. It remains to be seen though.

Well, good luck and post pics!

I dye the inside all the time with a record player, rim jobs are cool. Don't overthink it
