Airport Update - 2.30pm
Whilst there seems to be some unannounced/pending delays, seems that flights are still leaving, but visibility is getting worse.

Update 3.11pm - Virgin is still flying apparently, but we shall see if that continues.

I was in Melbourne and my Qantas flight got cancelled. I booked on a Virgin flight and made it home about 6pm. Ridiculous air though, I can see why Qantas cancelled.
Update 3.42pm - Booked w/ Virgin Confirmation from the desk is that they are still flying as expected this afternoon. I'll know more when i leave.
Qantas has closed all flights due to safety concerns surrounding Air Quality for Passengers and Ground Staff.
Virgin must be commended though, I typically don't fly with them - but they've been super helpful, and even whisked me into the lounge, despite being a brand new member.
Hope Virgin are not putting their staff or subcontractors at risk , bagge handlers especially, The smoke is really thick.
Most of them have masks on that I can see.
I had to bike to work (bus would've seen me walking for longer than bike) and I wore a mask. I was still wheezing like all fuck after an 8 minute ride. I am sure it's better than nothing but it's still so rough
:( Please, if you can, get a ride (or taxi or uber or something), that's going to be so bad for you.
Thats good but wouldnt want to be them, your real time posts about the flights is great BTW, not that Im flying but must be very helpful to those that are .
Nothing better to do if you're stuck in an airport for 6 hours :).
About to board tho.
My Qantas flight tonight to Melbourne got cancelled. Rebooked for tomorrow morning.

If you're a FF, Qantas will ask you if you want to be contacted to rebook - a lot of people were rebooked automatically. Personally I have a travel service, and they handed my re-booking to an alternate carrier for me.

I received a SMS 20mins after the first notification that I have been rebooked. Unfortunately when I tried to change flights, there was no other options.
Good real time information especially if people are planning to fly today, I guess they need to contact Qantas & Virgin . Hope you get to your destination in time.
Currently in the air on a Virgin flight to Canberra (1755) and no delays expected.
Raw info can be found here: http://www.bom.gov.au/aviation/forecasts/taf/#21
Using an iOS app 'AeroWeather' I get this (NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS FOR FLIGHT PLANNING (I haven't gone through it in detail to ensure it's correct (bit rusty and not intending to fly anywhere right now!)).

Indeed... better to be down here wishing you were up there rather than being up there wishing you were down here...
update - 2.40pm - All Qantas flights (maybe everyone, the announcement was Qantas) have been grounded.
Visibility is still worsening. Not sure whats happening now.

Flying back from Korea in 5 days myself (Seoul to Sydney). Should probably keep an eye on Asiana cancellations. At least my insurance covers hotel costs for unexpected extensions.
