Barge trips

Ask France

Hello French reddit. I've been thinking about taking a barge vacation along the Canal du Midi later this year. Not the sort of trip I've ever taken before, and I was just curious if anyone has any experience doing it, any recommendations for companies to hire a boat through (my intention is self-driving with 3 other people), and what not. Online reviews are the usual mix of only rave reviews and horror stories, so I'm finding it hard to decide if it'll be a nice relaxing boat trip, or if it will be a hell ride on a rickety boat floating in a canal full of raw sewage.

I've done it before. We rented a boat for a week. It's very fun, the boat is easy to drive, slow so you can still enjoy the view.

You'll need a bit of planning of course but it's not too much.

Take some books to read, it's really nice to read a book on a slow moving boat in the middle of nowhere. Also take a bike with you on the boat, there are trails all along canals, and it's easy to keep up (and race lol) with the boat.

Don't expect to be able to swim in the canal, it's water that doesn't move very much thus it's often very dirty.
