What to use for version control?

So, I'm thinking about maybe doing some modding. I read over the quick start mod guide and they recommended having a version control setup. I could also see this being useful if people wanted to colab on a larger mod.

I've done some open source software stuff with GitHub and visual studio for source control, and I've also used DevOps professionally. I see that the unreal engine has support for version control systems. But I'm wondering what service to use. I assume free GitHub is out of the question, since it would publicly post the entire games code...

Of course I'd like a free solution, but I'm open to paid stuff if I have to.

Any suggestions?

You can use github, and a public repo, just fine. The trick is going to be setting up a .gitignorefile which excludes all un-modified assets. The easiest way to do this would be to just add .*, which ignores all files in the repository. Once you git add a file, even if it would be covered by the .gitignore rules, it stays tracked, so git will tell you if it's been modified after you start tracking it the first time.

Gitlab offers free private repositories as far as I know

Perforce has native compatibility with UE4 and works well, but requires a server setup and doesnt include hosting like Git. I've used Git with Unreal before, and it works well, but having the checkout feature that functions with Perforce is very helpful when working with remote partners.
