A dead sheep, good thing hunters never kill animals for food!

20
UnbiasedBasedGod•

They aren't happy about dead farm animals though. I'd say they even work to prevent it. Unlike the famous 'wolf expert'.

-3

The good news: The other six little goats got away.

Ha ha. But seriously - the state is giving aid to people needing to protect their animals from wolves. No reason to kill such a rare creature.

11

People can't even protect their animals from foxes and you think they will keep them safe from wolves. Ha ha.

Quite a neutral source you found there :)))

14
UnbiasedBasedGod•

So where's your neutral source that does provide proof the wolf was killed by hunters? Or any proof from any source at all, there's nothing but random statements.

0†
UnderstepsOPAntwerpen•

People have been convicted by indirect evidence delivered by experts. There's plenty of indirect evidence. And threats, and a hunter club that doesn't want wolves nearby.

Usually the simplest explanation is true. The simplest explanation here is that the wolves was killed.

4
tomba_beBelgium•

Experts are quite sure they were killed by hunters.

2
Feranq•

This is probably one of most neutral source out there. It only lists the facts and the things that can be proven. It doesn't take the blame away from hunters, but it also doesn't blame them.

The fact that you disagree with this article doesn't make it a biased source.

-2
reaudeau•

We can differ in opinion on the neutrality of my source. I know how that list of questions came about, i.e. everything has been checked with the authorities and proper experts.

Fact is: nobody knows what happened to the wolf. We might never know. Why point the finger?

Problematic is the way media is reporting on these wolvea: giving way too much attention, naming the wolves, speaking about 'dating' and 'love life'.

Just accept the wolves are there and let them live their life. Way too many people are using the existence of the wolf for their own agenda, including media.

-5
FinniemcE.U.•

Why point the finger?

A few reasons.

  • Who has motive? That would be farmers and hunters
  • Who has means? Let's not forget that Naya was a notoriously shy wolf and she resided on a military domain. The idea a random farmer with a gun would find her is rather implausible.
  • Whether by accident or not: hunters already chased Gust unto the Noord-Zuid during a boar hunt. Despite the fact that that part was off limits.
  • Last but not least: hunters have been caught by drones and police patrols in that area (the off limits area) with loaded guns and other hunting equipment. And yes this was after the killing of Naya but that's because they only really started patrolling that area afterwards fearing Gust might meet the same end.
13
tomba_beBelgium•

No, claiming that hunters are a neutral source on this, is just bullshit.

Most experts agree that hunters are the most likely cause of the death.

8
ToyoMojito•

which agendas would this be? The one of the powerful lobby of nature lovers? I can see how 'welkom wolf' can be used as a vehicle from landschap vzw to make people enthusiastic about nature preservation in general, but lets not overstate their power.

The 'vision' at the bottom of your text shows that it is also made with a certain agenda in mind, and even though I want to believe in the best intentions of the authors of the piece, their own stance clearly shines through.

Can someone explain the whole situation around wolves in Belgium? I know that a pregnant wolf was shot by a hunter for some god forsaken reason but that's about it.

2
ToyoMojito•

Not pregnant. With infants.

I don't know the exact situation in Wallonia, but in Flanders, it's definitely something to be very proud of (maybe even canon-worthy?):

  • First wolf to arrive was Naya in 2018, whom later met August (wolf number 3) and had babies. She was most probably shot dead this summer by some guy with a very tiny penis, leaving her kids to die from hunger.
  • Second one to arrive, Roger, also in 2018, was run over by a car within days after his arrival. They stuffed him and put him on display in a government department, probably as some sort of an offer to the sacred god of cars.
  • Third one was August. He formed a couple with Naya and they had a bunch of kids this spring and they lived happily ever after. Well, would have, if that hunter didn't come to shoot Naya.
  • Fourth one is Noëlla, who arrived this winter. She seems to become August's new partner. I am already excited to find out how we will manage to kill this one.

5

Thanks for the bullet points. What a tragic story, I seriously hope something happens to those who harm them on purpose, but knowing Belgium I highly doubt it.

1
AurynTD•

Some people just don't want wolves here in Belgium.
For some it's because they are afraid they might attack people (though there is absolutely no prove they would) farmers worry about their sheep and other livestock as quite a few sheep have already been attacked by the wolves. And some just think there simply is no place for them in our country as to them it belongs to humans and not wolves.

And we also don't know for a fact that she was shot by a hunter, as a lot of hunters like to point out that it's mostly the farmers having issues with livestock getting eaten.
However there have been hunters who did flat out say they'd shoot them if given the chance and even though hunting is supposed to be limited in the region the wolves have been seen, a lot of hunters have been hanging around there.

Personally I welcome the wolves and I really hope the person responsible for killing Naya gets caught and sentenced as wolves are a protected species.

My sister lives just besides the forest the wolves are living and she and my brother-in-law love the idea and are in no way worried for their safety.

4
inferiormartin•

I also welcome the wolves, it's as much their world as it is ours. Beside, you're more likely to be attacked by a wild dog than wolves.

It might have been a farmer, whenever I mentioned hunter I just thought about anyone who went after the animal to harm it, be it a farmer or a hunter. I just hope they get brought to justice.

1
reaudeau•

There is no proof a hunter shot the wolf, the investigation is still ongoing.

-1†
inferiormartin•

Ah, ok. It seems like an easy assumption to make though considering what happened to Naya.

5
reaudeau•

True, and some hunters have been caught trespassing the area (but after she disappeared).

Until the investigation is finished, we have no certainty.

6
tomba_beBelgium•

It's just very likely according to experts. And since this is not a court of law, we are very well within our rights to just assume that hunters did kill them.

5
UnbiasedBasedGod•

I know that a pregnant wolve was shot by a hunter

No, you don't know that. You may have read that, but there is no evidence.

-7
tomba_beBelgium•

No evidence needed, just some common sense.

2
UnbiasedBasedGod•

Wolves kill farm animals, because they are easier to kill than wild animals and that's the only difference for the wolf. They just want to eat.
Since hunters don't hunt farm animals, they are not in competition with wolves. If the wolf has been killed, of which there is no proof, it's a lot more likely to have been killed by a farmer.
How does that play with your 'common sense'?

1
tomba_beBelgium•

I'm not dismissing farmers. They are probably the second most likely suspect. But not a lof of them have the means & knowledge.

But the idea is that farms get protected, so wolves will start eating wild animals, which puts them in direct competition with hunters. Hunters also love to kill birds of prey because they are competition. And there are plenty of hunters that would love to have the bragging rights for such a kill.

1
inferiormartin•

Clearly when I ask about the situation I don't know all the details, no need to be passive-aggresive over some wording.

-1†
UnbiasedBasedGod•

Since there is no proof for the one thing you claim to know, you don't just don't know all the details, you know nothing about it.

-3
inferiormartin•

'Know' or 'Know about' are basically interachangeable in the English language. In this context I'm not saying that the wolf was shot, but that I know about the situation. It's such a moot point that I don't understand why you brought it up in the first place.

Because it is an enrichment of our ecosystem, and they are protected animals.

Why is it an enrichment of our ecosystem? Why are they protected animals?

Not that I really have anything against these wolves in Belgium or them mating and all that but is there actually still someone around who believes that this wasn't all set up in the first place?

-51
UnderstepsOPAntwerpen•

Yes. The population of wolves has been increasing in Germany for decades, there have been sightings of wolves in the Netherlands and Eastern Belgium since 2000, and increasingly since 2015. Wolves are extremely difficult to catch.

But no, it has to be a conspiracy against hunters and small cattle owners 🙄

44
Crypto-Raven•

But no, it has to be a conspiracy against hunters and small cattle owners

Doesn't have to be, but if you look into normal wolf behaviour, wolves suddenly running 100's of miles in an almost perfect direction to meet up with the only specimen of the opposite sex in the area in such a short time is questionnable at the very least.

Wolves are extremely difficult to catch.

Not really when you see researchers in Canada catching dozens of them in a pretty short time. If the population in Germany has risen in the way you claim, it shouldn't be all that hard to catch a female at all.

Wolves follow locations they can hide and which have plenty of food. Not that many places around. So it makes sense they follow that road and end up in the same location.

2
FinniemcE.U.•

who believes that this wasn't all set up in the first place?

How exactly? They found a wolf somewhere in the east, animals that are well known for roaming and can easily cover 50-60 km a night, dropped her in Leopoldsburg, and told her to "sit"?

And when that worked they repeated it another three times (Gust, Noella and the one that was killed by a car in Neeroeteren)?

8
Crypto-Raven•

This is the second time a random female wolf runs hundreds of miles perfectly in the correct direction to meet up with the only male wolf in a radius of over 100 km in a short time-span after having no wolves for a really long time. Again, I don't even mind them reintroducing wolves in Belgium per se, but isn't it only normal to question this?

Edit: being downvoted for telling people to question things instead of blindly believing everything they read in the newspaper or see on the news is the new thing. I'll start believing it when people actually explain how this is normal wolf behaviour and how the odds aren't stacked immensely against this from happening.

-12
Sportsfanno1Meaniebeanie•

So you're a wolf behaviour expert then?

10
FinniemcE.U.•

This is the second time a random female wolf runs hundreds of miles perfectly in the correct direction to meet up with the only male wolf in a radius of over 100 km

Couple of things:

  • This is the first time. Naya was here first.
  • They don't run perfectly in the correct direction. I don't know if it's publicly available but Naya's route was anything but perfect.
  • The Netherlands have had at least 17 wolves entering or passing through it in the last two years. They have been getting wolf sightings since 2015.
  • They meet because frankly it's the only true open space large enough to contain wolves we have in Flanders and it's bordered on three sides by highways (E-34/E-313 and E-314).
  • We are suddenly getting an influx of wolves because the German wolf packs closest to us are 2-3-4 years old which means that their pups are leaving the pack and the only "wolf-free" terrain for them to create their own pack is down towards the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. In France the same thing is happening and the reason why the South of Wallonia is now getting more sightings

being downvoted for telling people to question things instead of blindly believing everything they read in the newspaper or see on the news is the new thing.

Your own arguments come from not much else than personal incredulity. You give no true arguments other than "I don't believe it". I'm all for questioning some else his beliefs but you have to bring something to the table yourself.

6
tomba_beBelgium•

You are being downvoted because you come up with some conspiracy theory without providing any reasoning, and then complain that people who call you out do not provide enough evidence to your liking.

Start by giving some evidence of your theory...

4
UnderstepsOPAntwerpen•

Running 100km is not strange for wolves. To run into the same direction also makes sense because they all look for food and hiding places in very populated areas.

Even st Hubertus said they travelled on their own.

1
sherlockzorLimburg•

yup, these killerwolves have been bred by the cia since the coldwar crisis

8
Crypto-Raven•

Instead of just going all "you must be a hunter/cattle holder" conspiracy nut, why don't you actually come down from your pretentious high horse with sane arguments yourself instead? If your name says anything about you, I'd expect you to question everything until you are absolutely sure that there isn't any other possibility instead of just being dismissive to the point of pulling it into the ridiculous. I am not a hunter, I don't hold cattle and I live in the center of Antwerp so for all I care they can introduce a thousand wolves in Limburg.

What I am saying really isn't the holy truth, nor am I claiming it as fact, but anyone who knows normal wolf behaviour should at the very least be asking questions about this very out of the ordinary behaviour, not once, but twice, in such a short time-span.

-6
sherlockzorLimburg•

Why would a wolf be moving about?

  • Forests getting chopped
  • increased urbanisation
  • lack of food
  • ...
8
