Any idea what is going on in downtown? Several buildings are without power and there are reports of fires from them. This was taken at 9 at the intersection of 18th and Colorado.

Underground electrical fire at 18th and Colorado is what we were told by DPS.

Oh nice. So like, no need to evacuate the area? I guess we don’t have gas lines running here?

Good question. I suspect that the electrical wires and gas pipe are sufficiently isolated from each other that there's not a lot of risk of a gas explosion.

I suspect that they probably didn’t think the construction was going to start the fire in the first place.

The electric stuff is often is a separate enclosure such that, even if the electrical stuff burns, it's not likely to rupture a gas line and start a gas fire. Not 100% reliable, but actually works fairly well.

I don’t know but my son works in one of the state office buildings there and they got sent home for the day. No electricity in the building.

DPS has been advised of a underground electrical fire at the intersection of 18th & Colorado Street. (behind Bob Bullock Museum). Colorado Street at 17th Street are closed. Traffic Is being rerouted. Please avoid the area. The road will be closed for approximately 4-8 hours. Austin Fire Department and repair crews are on scene.

Ty, so the advisory to stay out of the area is for traffic concerns or public health?

All I know is what was in the email.

it's taken some people an hour or more to leave the parking garages.

they were literally filming Fear the Walking Dead in that area last week. probably saves money on zombie extras, making the location look like a wasteland

Transformers that are normally above ground in the rest of the city are in tunnels below ground downtown for the power needs of the bigger buildings.... So when one busts it explodes underground rather than above ground and can cause a tunnel fire. I was working in a hotel downtown when this happened one night about, oh, 6-7 years ago... and we were without power for around 12 hours while they put out/cleaned up from the fire and put in new transformers.

That was a fun night! (not)
